That's What Cheesehead - 01.04 - Guam Traded

Post by 7teen » Mon May 30, 2011 1:25 pm

The revamping of the Wolves roster continues. After four straight disappointing exits in the MBBA playoffs, General Manager Chris Wilson has decided some things need to change. While there are many teams that may be happy playing in four straight post-seasons, the Wolves front office has decided that just making it to the playoffs isn't enough any more. Something needs to be done if the club wants to finally win the title. First, Wilson sent Hurley Reyes packing. Now, Wilson has sent another popular player in Guam Fantomhorsfli to another team.

In a deal with division rival Phoenix, the Wolves sent Fantomhorsfli along with minor leaguers Joaquin Ayala and Mark Wheeler in exchange for Mark Hurt, John Simonson, and Moises Rentas. The deal helps cut more salary for the cap strapped Wolves as well as making the team younger.

"Phoenix got the best player in the deal" said Wilson, "but we helped ourselves out as well. Hurt is a fine young outfielder who will let start the season in AAA to see if we can't boost his ratings some more. He's not quite ready to become a full-time starter at the big league level. Simonson is a fine looking 2b who could be destined for some ABs at the big league level. Unfortunately for him, he'll have a tough time beating out Charles Puckett for playing time, but he could see some backup duty down the road. Rentas is currently a starter pitcher. He doesn't have any big league experience but has had tremendous success in the minors. If he doesn't improve some, he may not be a full-time starter, but we see the potential in him becoming a shutdown reliever in the future."

Guam Fantomhorsfli spent 2.5 seasons with the Wolves and had plenty of success. He hit 57 homeruns and never had an OBP below .375 during his tenure in Madison. Guam is still signed through the 2003 season and is expected to make $8.75 million a season. While Guam is still a top notch player, the Wolves organization has decided that keeping aging players around with lofty contract while younger players are coming up ready to play just wasn't a smart business decision. Hopefully the club will continue to win in 2001 and the fans will forgive the front office for trading away two popular players.

I don't know if I've ever seen a pitching split as wide as Rentas. He could end up being an amazing lefty specialist out of the bullpen.

Plus, Rentas is like THE idllyic candidate for a reliever conversion.

I've already used mine for this year. I'll be keeping an eye on Rentas as we head into next season.
