"I'm excited to begin this next chapter in my career and am thrilled to return back to Madison full-time" said Puckett at today's press conference. "Hopefully I can be a part of something special over the next few years here in Madison."
The 60 year-old Puckett has spent the last 15 seasons managing various farm teams in the Madison minor leagues. A majority of that time has been spent in the Wolves Triple-A system with the South Bend Proudest Monkeys.
As a manager, Puckett had very little success. Only twice in 15 seasons did Puckett finish better than third in the division and both times those were second place finishes. He never won a division but did win the AAA Championship in 2030 with the Proudest Monkeys after making the post-season as a wild card team.
Puckett joins John Catron on the staff now as the two played together in Madison through the 2003 season. Catron is currently the Wolves' hitting coach. He also joins Jorge Garcia who was with Puckett on both Landis Championship teams in 2004 and 2009. Garcia is the current Wolves' pitching coach.
The Wolves still have numerous guys managing and coaching in the farm system from the "hey-days" of Wolves baseball. Perhaps one of them will become the new Assistant GM that remains vacant at the moment. Unless Dan Fiscus ever decides to accept our low-ball offers on him.
