That's What Cheesehead: 37.01 -Wolves Pick up Mario's Option

The off-season has finally begun around the BBA and the first order of business is picking up or declining options. As was reported earlier, the team declined to pick up the team option on Jody Nunez citing player performance as a reason not to pay the pitcher $14 million next season. But with that said, the club has decided to pick-up the $6 million price tag attached to Mario Gonzalez (13 - 13, 4.68 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 116 K) for the 2037 season.

There was very little reason to believe the Wolves wouldn't pick up the option on Gonzalez after the southpaw starter had a solid 2036 season. A minor dispute at the end of the season over Gonzalez being upset over not being named the Evander Kilkenny Award recipient put some doubt in fans mind over whether Gonzalez wanted to be back but a lot of that was put to rest this week when the team still picked up his option. Gonzalez nor his agent commented on situation publicly, only issuing a statement that "Mario was excited to return to Madison and hoped the 2037 season would be a better year than 2036."

Mario had already left for the off-season to visit his home country in the Dominican.

General Manager Chris Wilson commented on the contract and situation. "There is no situation. We had actually told Mario earlier in the season we'd be picking up his contract option for next season so it was never even in doubt. Yeah, Mario was a little upset over the team award announcements, thinking it was a bigger deal than it was. Once we talked over the phone things were put to bed and to rest. He even congratulated James for winning the award. It's not an issue and we are excited to have Mario back. He'll likely be our #1 starter next season."

At $6 million next season, Gonzalez will make $4 million less in 2037 than he did this season. Mario tied for the team lead in wins last season with 13 and his 16 quality starts were also a team best.
