That's What Cheesehead: 36.52 - Kengos Rookie Award

Post by 7teen » Fri Nov 16, 2018 8:22 am

The Madison Wolves opted to go ahead and rush through their annual season awards early this season in an effort to try and forget just how bad this season went after having high hopes heading in. The first award handed out was the Bopper Kengos Award given to the team's top rookie in 2036.

Madison had several young rookies make their debut in 2036. On the pitching side of things, the Wolves debuted two relievers who spent the entire season with the big league squad. Mauricio Graete (10/7/6 Ratings), acquired in a trade with Huntsville last season, appeared in 57 games with Madison and had some solid success. He went 4-6 overall with a 3.86 earned run average in 56 innings pitched. Barry Ronan (10/5/6 Ratings) wasn't and still isn't quite ready for a big league team but he was out of options and the team didn't want to risk losing him to waivers so kept him on the roster all season. He had some ups and down during the year, finishing with a 5.79 ERA over 46.2 innings pitched. He appeared in 42 games, striking out 51 batters over the season. The two had WAR of 0.7 and -0.1 respectively.

On the offensive side, two big names made debuts in Ross Quicker (7/8/6/5/8 Ratings) and Natanael Barral (7/9/8/7/6 Ratings). Quicker, a 19 year old 3B, started the season with the club but spent some time in the minor leagues early after some struggles hit in April. After a sluggish 1st half of the season, he finally found his stride in August when he hit .388 with a .929 OPS for the month. The solid second half put him at a respectable .279/.345/.384 for the season with 4 homeruns, 55 RBI, and 20 stolen bases. Good enough for a 1.3 overall WAR. Barral was a mid season call-up, filling in for the injured Mons Raider at 1B. Barral was solid out of the gate, hitting over .270 in his first two months and posting an OPS of over .800 combined for May and June. A cold July saw him bat just .182 and the 20 year old faced some rookie adversity. However, he showed enough to the front office that when Raider returned, the club opted to keep him on and he stayed in the lineup. In the end, he hit .252/.350/.391 for the season over 113 games, belting 8 homeruns and driving in 55 RBI. The two finished with a 1.3 and 0.8 WAR respectively.

In the end, the award went to Quicker. I'm not a WAR only decider but it made the end difference. When you compare Quicker and Barral they were very similar. They played in nearly the exact same number of games. Barral drew more walks while Quicker had more hits. Barral had more doubles but also struck out a lot more. Both played just average defense and Quicker had more steals. So in the end, we went with the guy with the slightly higher WAR overall and that was Quicker. Nonetheless, we really like both of these offensive guys, assuming Barral can find a spot in the lineup next season.

Quicker needs better defense to justify that nickname!
