That's What Cheesehead: 36.45 - Dempsey's Streak to End

Post by 7teen » Thu Nov 01, 2018 12:05 pm

In a season where Madison finally found some decent pitching performances, it is starting to show that the offense has fallen behind. A large part of that problem has become injuries. The first major one hit Mons Raider (.325/.429/.402, 1 HR, 23 RBI) that forced him out for over two months and the latest has come to Steve Dempsey (.302/.332/.374, 0 HR, 53 RBI) that will force him to miss the remainder of the 2036 season.

The blow is a huge loss to both Dempsey and the Wolves. While the Wolves remain still 9 games under .500, they had some slim chances at a possible Wild Card spot in the Frick League. Losing Dempsey and his bat likely ends those unlikely hopes. But just as devastating comes the end of a streak for Steve. Dempsey, with 2,204 career base hits, will now fall short of getting 200 this season. Something he had done 5 consecutive times and 7 times over the last 8 years.

"Yeah, it sucks to have any injury. But that streak was something I was proud of" said Steve today when it was announced he'd miss 6 weeks with a sprained thumb suffered against Des Moines. "I know I take a little heat for my contract, poor defensive play, low WAR, and lack of power. But I pride myself in getting hits and doubles. I also take pride in being one of the greatest base hit guys in this franchise's history. Hopefully this won't linger and I can get back on track next season."

At the age of 30, Dempsey still has plenty of years left to play professional baseball. The Wolves front office hopes this injury is nothing more than a hiccup and Steve will return to form in 2037.

After listening to your all's last podcast, I look at your salary/WAR comparison and guys like Dempsey and Mick do not fit into your mold! haha

A couple points there...

1) Like I said in the podcast, I break that rule all the time. :) It's a rule of thumb to start with more than anything else.
2) Reliable multi-WAR performers are often worth more than the rule of thumb--because usually teams have cheap sources of WAR in their min-sal players. Overall, the baseline of my theory is based on getting 50 WAR for $110M. It doesn't matter where that WAR comes from in the end.
3) Mick and Dempsey's contracts aren't horrible by dollars if they perform, but they have risk of becoming albatrosses--Mick's in particular. I don't mind taking risky contracts if I understand the risks and have ways to get out if they go bad. :)

I'm a little worried about Dempsey's more right now than Mick's. Dempsey's OF defense is so bad it kills his WAR. Even though he had his worst year ever this year, he still hit .302 and stole 55 bases. So he's an asset in some fashion. But I'm starting to collect too many 1B/DH types that's hurting in constsructing a roster.

Wish I could turn the clock back 3 seasons and have pushed trading Dempsey and kept Maldonado. But damn, I get suckered into stat and historical stories and couldn't trade Dempsey thinking he could end up with 3,000 hits. Maybe I'm too much of a fan GM. I need to learn to be cut throat.

Well, both of them are risky in the end. But then, all long-term deals are.
