That's What Cheesehead: 36.39 - Wolves Lose Cantrell for Season

In a season that has had more twists and turns and ups and downs than most recent ones in Madison, the 2036 campaign just took another turn for the worst this week when it was announced that Wolves southpaw extraordinaire Andy "Duck" Cantrell (3 - 3, 5.21 ERA, 1.74 WHIP, 38 K) suffered a ruptured ulnar collateral ligament and will miss the rest of the 2036 season and part of the 2037 season. The injury is expected to have him miss approximately 13 months.

"It's a tough blow for our pitching staff" said Wolves manager Millard Davis. "I know Cantrell has had some rough starts the last few weeks but he was a versatile member of our entire staff. We've been floating guys around between the bullpen and rotation depending on the matchups. Cantrell was a key figure on our staff last season against teams with bad lefty records and we were trying to start utilizing that again this season. But with his injury, we'll have to figure out some other options the rest of the way."

The injury occurred in the Wolves' 9-1 loss to Vancouver this week. In the top of the 5th inning, the ligament just popped. Cantrell knew immediately it wasn't good. "The pain was excruciating" Cantrell said later. "I had never had my arm just pop like that. I knew it was bad." You could actually see it on the video on Cantrell's delivery. His arm just sort of extended. The slow motion replay was shown once and not shown again due to the graphic nature. In fact, the video and injury was so gruesome it made many ponder whether the game of baseball is even worth it.

Rumors are that, following the injury, Vancouver's GM Joe Geoghegan decided that being involved in such a gruesome game wasn't worth it and promptly resigned as General Manager of the Mounties squad. Of course others are reporting that the fact Madison won another series against Vancouver may have driven Geoghegan away. (FWIW, Joe, I hope everything is ok. Gonna miss being able to rekindle this rivalry.)

For what I hope isn't the last time....... :coffee:
