The girls left in a hurry after a small "whoopsie".
"Seriously, this banana bread is amazing!" exclaimed Mandy, licking the last crumbs off her fingers. "I could eat this all day."
And they almost did. They met with the now-reclusive GM Fred Holmes, who was rumored to still be in mourning over the loss of his best BBA buddy, Brett "AFBI" Schroeder. The ladies expressed their condolences while simultaneously gushing about the banana bread.
"We heard about your morning wood, Fred," Beth said with a cheeky grin. "Those banana bread trees must be something special."
Fred chuckled, but there was a sadness in his eyes that couldn’t be ignored. The girls did their best to lift his spirits, but the combination of nostalgia and delicious banana bread left them in a bit of a food coma.
Despite their full stomachs, the girls were eager to explore Mexico City. They visited several iconic sites, including the historic Zócalo, the bustling markets of La Merced, and the ancient pyramids of Teotihuacan. All that walking made them incredibly thirsty, and despite GM Holmes’s warning, they drank plenty of local water to quench their thirst.
"Fred warned us not to drink the water," Gertie admitted later. "But we were so thirsty after all that walking!"
What happened next wasn’t pretty. Each of the ladies fell victim to Montezuma’s Revenge, experiencing explosive diarrhea that had them racing for the nearest bathroom. It was like a scene out of a horror movie, with the girls doubled over in pain, clutching their stomachs, and running at top speed for any available restroom.
"I don’t think I’ve ever experienced anything like it," said Beth, still pale from the ordeal. "One minute we were fine, and the next, it was like a volcano erupting in our intestines. I barely made it to the bathroom in time."
The situation was made even worse by the fact that public restrooms in Mexico City can be hard to find, and often require a small fee to use. The girls had to scramble to find change while desperately trying to hold back the inevitable.
One of them, fortunately, still had the pass to Fred Holmes’s private suite and its luxurious bathroom.
"We were in such a state," Beth recounted, grimacing at the memory. "I don’t think I’ve ever run so fast in my life. Thank goodness for that private bathroom!"
Despite the intestinal turmoil, the girls managed to attend the Aztecs’ game against the Brooklyn Robins. The Aztecs emerged victorious with a 9-4 win, thanks in large part to Fernando Moreno’s stellar performance. Moreno went 3 for 4 with a triple and 2 singles, scoring 2 runs and driving in another 2. Guo-dong Cong, the winning pitcher, improved to 1-3 after pitching 6 innings and giving up 8 hits and 4 runs, while striking out 5 and walking 1.
"The fans who came to support the Aztecs were pleased with the outcome," Gertie noted. "It was what they had hoped for when they passed through the turnstiles at Ullamaliztli Field."
Moreno himself was optimistic about the team’s future. "I still think this team can play even better," he told the Mexico City Herald.
The game wasn’t without its setbacks, though. There was a rain delay of 15 minutes in the 7th inning, and 3B Juan Anaya was injured while running the bases. But these minor hiccups didn’t dampen the overall excitement of the day.
As the girls reflected on their Mexico City adventure, they couldn’t help but laugh at their mishap with the water. "We’ll definitely listen to Fred next time," Mandy said with a wry smile. "But hey, at least we got to experience the true Mexican culture, right?"
Beth even joked about how their adventure made her feel like the "Hawk Tuah Girl," referencing the obscure yet unforgettable incident from a previous trip where a woman known only as Hawk Tuah gave them all food poisoning from questionable street food. This time, Montezuma’s Revenge had taken its toll, and the girls couldn’t help but draw comparisons to their previous escapades.
Gertie’s Girls left Mexico City with fond memories, despite the gastrointestinal distress. They had experienced the warmth of Mexican hospitality, the thrill of a great baseball game, and the undeniable charm of Ullamaliztli Field. Their journey continued, with more adventures waiting just around the corner.
