Orlando Chavez entered the 2007 season with a total of 19 career MLB at bats under his belt. These came at the tail end of the 2006 season after a dominating performance in AA which saw him post a .931 OPS largely on the strength of his .328 average and 20 home runs along with a 70/48 BB/K ratio.
The first half of 2007 was largely uneventful for the rookie first baseman as he accumulated a very pedestrian .269/.321/.444 line with 7 home runs and 47 strikeouts in 223 at bats. However, things changed once the clock switched to July 1st as Chavez has since hit .350/.398/.545 with 13 home runs while reducing his strikeouts to 37 in 246 at bats and, in turn, earned his first Player of the Week Award during this past week by posting a .526 average with 4 home runs and 10 RBI's.
A previously unaddressed need at first base looks like it might just be in capable hands as Chavez currently looks to be the leading candidate for ROY while leading all Johnson League rookies in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging, and home runs.
