In an announcement today, the Chicago Black Sox announced a multi-year plan for Minor League adjustments. With the announcement, the Chicago affiliates will be positioned closer to the teams headquarters and Spring Training Facility.
The adjustments will be as follows:
2055: Triple-A team moves to Rockford, renaming to Rockford Bulldogs.
2056: Double-A team moves to Peoria, renaming to Peoria Storm (pending league approval)
2056: Single-A team move is pending league approval. To be announced at a future date.
2057: Short-Season A team moves to Mesa, Arizona and becomes the Mesa Heat (pending league approval)
2057: Rookie League team becomes the Arizona Black Sox, but will share a facility with the Mesa Heat. (pending league approval)
With the Rockford & Peoria moves, Chicago has purchased land in Ottawa, Illinois to build a performance center. Ottawa is a central location, within 90 minutes of Peoria, Rockford & Chicago. At the performance center, Chicago will host player development training during offseason and house players during the season.
In time for 2057, Chicago will open a new Spring Training facility in Mesa, Arizona. The Spring Training facility will become home to the Short-Season A and Rookie League team during the season as well as a player development facility during the offseason.
The moves are meant to create stronger synergies between the Major League club and player development staff as Chicago tries to retool a once dominant franchise.
"These relocations and facility upgrades will allow us to provide our players with an elite experience. We will continue to invest in our player development processes in order to build a strong organization from top on down" says Kevin Chmura, Black Sox General Manager.
