Sox Signed The Sheriff

But it did not sign the deputy

Chicago, April 8, 2054 -- Banking on older arms to eat up innings, the Black Sox today announced the signing of veteran starting pitcher Brian 'The Sheriff' King to a one-year deal worth $9.5 million plus incentives.

There's a new sheriff in town
"We are operating under two tried-and-true baseball principles with this signing," said GM Mike Dunn. "One is, 'You can never have too much pitching' (YCNHTMP) and the other is, "There's no such thing as a bad one-year deal" (TNSTAABOYD). We are proud to have the Sheriff join our club, and we trust that his long experience will rub off on youngsters like (21-year old) Dirk 'Stocky' Bessi and (23-year old) Carlos Moya."

Both Bessi and Moya made their major league debuts this past week after making the big league roster out of spring training. Moya in particular faired well, holding Omaha, which won 105 games last year, to just two hits and no runs over 7.1 innings.

Dunn would not speak to reports that he'd tried and failed to sign a few similar starters who remain available but were uninterested in playing on a likely losing ball club. "All I can say is, good luck watching games on your couch," said the GM.

King has pitched in 11 seasons in the major leagues, with Twin Cities, Madison, Calgary, Las Vegas and most recently, Valencia. He has a 3.58 career ERA, and a career ERA+ of 121.

The Black Sox started the season with seven straight road games, going 3-4 against Omaha and Madison. Their next game is the home opener on Thursday April 9 as the club opens a three game series against Yellow Springs. King is expected to start the home opener.

I'm really tempted to spend 5PP and nickname some free agent pitcher out there "The Deputy" if Matt would allow it!

I'm all for the DUAWYCPI rule (Dua WYC pi, for those scoring at home): Don't use acronyms when you can't pronounce it.

OYMASWYST (OY mas wyst): Otherwise you mumble and stumble when you say them.
