51.12 Rotation Rotation

Rotation Rotation
Only one starter remains from opening day rotation

Chicago, July 7, 2051 - Today's trade with Rockville for starter Ray Verhoeve made it official: four-fifths of the starting rotation that was in place on Opening Day are gone, with new faces in their place.

The July 4 season-ending injury to starter Garrison Hewitt, who himself replaced starter Jan Chmelyk after a season ending injury, prompted GM Mike Dunn to quickly go out and acquire Verhoeve to fill that gap. The previous week Dunn had unceremoniously released high-priced SP bust Jim Wilkinson, eating nearly $20 million in the process, and filled that slot with Mrej Stavnicky from AAA. Prior to that, stud prospect Malik bin Adnan was sent down to the farm and Rule 5 hopeful Ramiro Medina was sent back to Twin Cities.

If you're having trouble keeping score on this revolving, we thought we'd help out with this handy-dandy chart: the Before and After of the Black Sox starting rotation:

So there you have it. Out with the old, in with the new. Three trades and one call-up fill four roster slots made vacant by one demotion, one release, one Rule 5 bust, and two ugly injuries.

Throughout all this, the club has managed to remain in the thick of the hunt for the Heartland crown, with the offense now 2nd in the Frick for BA and OBP, and the bullpen first in the Frick for ERA. But the club is slipping fast after a disappointing June, and so July will show whether this group of starters can bring stability to the rotation. If not, more changes may be in order.

Starting pitchers are over rated. Except Bernie Stuart, he is the man.

So the newly-acquired Verhoeve didn't even get out of the second inning in his Black Sox debut, giving up 6 earned runs on 44 pitches. Thank you very much @JimSlade!

More changes may be coming...
