Struggling to Find a 5th Starter, Team Boots One Bum and Gives Another a Tryout
EDITOR'S NOTE: After this story went to press, the team's effort to find a fifth starter shifted, as the club obtained SP Francisco 'Clubhouse' Ortíz from Las Vegas for 3B prospect Tristan Lloyd. It's unclear whether the team intends to retain Camacho. We've decided to keep this story posted in a shameless effort to get every damn team news participation point we earned.

Chicago, June 16, 2051 - With next-to-no cap space prohibiting the team from making a decent trade, the Black Sox Front Office has decided to look to the trash heap of other teams in hopes of finding some pitching gold, or at least someone who can eat innings in the fifth spot of the rotation.

If this topic has you yawning, we don't blame you. But the back end of the Black Sox rotation is the teams true sore spot. On offense, the club is first in the Frick in batting average and OPS, and is near the top in several other offensive categories. The team's bullpen is also proving solid, with a 2.61 ERA, also first in the Frick. The starting rotation, by contrast, has an ERA just a hair over 4.00 -- not terrible, but the front office at the start of June decided that the #4 and #5 spots in the rotation needed an upgrade to continue to contend in the dog-eat-dog Heartland Division.

The Front Office addressed the fourth spot in the rotation just two weeks ago. GM Mike Dunn demoted struggling prospect Malik bin Adnan to AAA. This raised eyebrows among pundits -- Malik had not been great, but by no means was he terrible. But the team felt he could benefit from more time on the farm, so down he went.

Replacing bin Adnan in the fourth spot was veteran Miguel Ayala, acquired on June 2 from the aforementioned River Monsters for a middling prospect, SP Kujapa Padmanabhan. Ayala, since his arrival in Chicago, has been nothing short of awesome, with a 0.93 ERA and three wins in three starts. No one on the Black Sox would comment on this result, adhering to the team's strict policy of not talking about any sort of success in fear of jinxing it.

So that leaves the #5 spot. The team today booted SP Ramiro Medina to Twin Cities. Medina had been obtained in the Rule 5 draft, so now he goes scuttling back to the River Monsters. "We gave him 12 starts, but other than a few decent appearances, he just didn't cut it," said Bastiaan van de Voorst, Assistant GM.

So out goes one bum, in comes another. The team simultaneously claimed a starter off the waiver wire, 26-year old Ramón Camacho, who had been DFA'd by Boise. In many ways, Camacho projects to be a carbon copy of Medina:

Will Camacho be gold while Medina was coal? We shall see. The club, we're told, will have Camacho on a shorter leash. "He definitely won't get 12 starts to prove himself. More like five or six starts to see what he can do," says van de Voorst (who must have the voorst name of any front office type in the Brewster.

Camacho has this great trick where he serves up hanging sliders to everyone in the Johnson League. Ask him to show you that one first — it'll save you five or six starts.
