47:002 Sox Scoops: Oh, Oh, OH, Bartolo!

Post by allenciox » Sat Jun 19, 2021 9:10 am

So, I went to the barbershop this week. The barber said, "So what kind of trim do you want? Our specialty this week is the 'Bartolo'". I am not kidding. Wherever you go in Chicago these days, the name Bartolo Munoz is on everyone's lips. Yes, this 28-year old journeyman pitcher who had a 5.29 ERA between New Orleans and San Antonio last season, and a 4.46 ERA for Beirut of the lowly UMEBA the year before that, is now tearing up the BBA, having won pitcher of the month for May. How has he done since then? His next start, on June 2, he continued his dominance allowing just one run over seven innings. On his last outing (June 8), he finally appeared to come down to earth a bit as he allowed two runs in six innings, sending his ERA skyrocketing to 1.95 over 9 games started this season.

So who is this guy, and how did he come to be wearing a Black Sox uniform? Before the season, due to some outrageous arbitration decisions (that have since been reversed), the Black Sox were over cap without signing a single player in the offseason. But they "could" offer a player a minor league contract with a major league option. Bartolo was not offered arbitration by San Antonio and became a free agent. And he had spent the entire winter without even a glance from anyone. The Black Sox finally offered him such a contract, with an $800,000 option should he be called up in the first month of the season, as an "insurance" policy in case one of the starters got hurt. Which is exactly what happened when
Romeu Tameiro tore out his shoulder in his first start of the season. He underwent surgery and will be out the rest of the season.

So you might think that is when the Black Sox gave Bartolo his chance, right? Well.... not so fast. First of all, they promoted promising 22-year old
Elmer Foley to take on the pitching responsibilities, but he got hurt in his third start. So they had no choice but to turn to Bartolo and give him an opportunity.

And Bartolo has seized that opportunity with an intensity seldom seen before he got to Chicago. One New Orleans fan who watched him shut down their team when Chicago visited last month put it succinctly: "This is NOT the same Bartolo we saw last season".

And that about sums it up.
