Sox Scoops 46.005: Class A Season Wrap-up, Hitter and Pitcher of Year

Post by HoosierVic » Mon Feb 08, 2021 2:03 pm

The Grand Junction Gold Sox made the Provost Subleague playoffs in 2045 - the 5th time in their last six seasons - and made it to the Pegler Championship series before losing 3 games to 1 to the Toledo Liberty.

On Monday, the team named its Hitter and Pitcher of the Year, both of whom were key players in Grand Junction’s successful season.

Catcher Rafael Elias, 20, Detroit, was named Hitter of the Year after posting a .275/.388/.453 slashline with 8 home runs, 55 RBIs and 3.1 WAR in 95 games.

SP/RP David Pratt, 21, Washington, D.C., was tabbed as Pitcher of the Year on the strength of a 10-2 record with a 2.19 ERA, 3.20 FIP, and 13.0 K/9. He compiled 3.0 WAR in 107 innings spread across 37 games and 18 starts.

The Provost Subleague took notice, too: Pratt won the league’s Jack Sellers Pitching Award, getting 27 of the 32 possible first place votes.

Season Bottom Line

Grand Junction stumbled out of the gate, posting a losing record in April, but quickly righted the ship. By the end of May, the Sox had taken over the West Central Division lead and battled the rest of the way to an 82-58 final record, 4 games ahead of Pahrump.

In the playoffs, the Gold Sox ousted Prince George 2-0 in the Outfield Rail Series; then got past Pahrump 2-1 in the Garden Cup before dropping the Pegler Series 3-1 to Toledo.

Following the season, Roberto Solis was named Manager of the Year for the Provost Subleague.
