Sox Scoops 46.004: Short Season A League Wrap-up, Hitter and Pitcher of Year

Post by HoosierVic » Sun Feb 07, 2021 1:57 pm

The San Pedro de Macoris Green Sox returned to the playoffs in 2045 for the first time since 2034, winning the SL2 Big Islands Division, and the Sub-League 2 title before falling to Daytona Beach 3-0 in the Angela Drake League championship series.

This weekend, the team capped off its season by naming its hitter and pitcher of the year.

Outfielder Alfonso Martinez, 27, of Venezuela, won Hitter of the Year on the strength of a .318/.502/.451 slashline, with 4 homers, 37 RBIs, and 3.2 WAR in 55 games. He finished 3rd in Sub League 2 Outstanding Hitter balloting.

Pitcher of the Year went to Alberto Gómez, 25, Cuba, who went 5-1 with an ERA of 1.66 in 14 starts. He finished 3rd in in Sub League 2 Outstanding Pitcher voting.

Season Bottom Line

San Pedro’s run was improbable for any number of reasons, not least of which were the circumstances under which its 2045 roster came together. Instead of serving as the launch pad for Chicago’s college-age draftees, the franchise decided to experiment and assemble a lineup based solely on defensive prowess. Pitchers were chosen not so much on scouting assessments of their skills as on whether they profiled as groundballers or extreme groundballers.

Just what the front office was hoping to discover is unclear.

But San Pedro fans had little to complain about as the team swept to a record of 53-23 and put up the best winning percentage (.697) in its history.

Manager Ernesto Garcia won SL2 Manager of the Year following the season.
