The San Pedro de Macoris have named OF Félix Cruz, an international free agency find from 2038, as their hitter of the year.

Cruz, 22, of Puerto Rico, slashed .368/.484/.612 in 2043 for the Short Season Class A affiliate of the Chicago Black Sox.

The team award was just the latest accolade for Cruz. In September, he was named the Sub-League 2 Player of the Year for the Angela Drake League, taking 30 first place votes out of a possible 32. Teammate 2B Felipe Olvera (.329/.412/.517) finished third in the balloting.

Cruz also won the league’s Platinum Stick Award at LF, the Batter of the Month award for June, and two Batter of the Week awards.

“It’s been a great year,” Cruz said, “and this crudely printed certificate from the team just kind of tops everything.”

Manager Ernesto Garcia said Cruz was a standout on a loaded offense that ranked either first or second in virtually every meaningful hitting category.

“He was the straw that stirred the drink, that’s for sure,” Garcia said.

Cruz will move on to Class A Grand Junction next season, and Garcia said he expects nothing but great things from his young star.

“I know the scouts aren’t exactly sold on his skills and say he swings recklessly sometimes, but he did nothing but produce for us this year,” he said. “I find it hard to believe he’ll just forget how to hit as he moves up through the system.”
