RP James Matarazzo was out for one week with elbow inflammation, but did not go on the Injured List. He has one more day until he can resume action.

A minor league injury of note: utility player Joe Mills of the Carolina Flight will miss the rest of the season with a broken bone in his elbow. He was placed on the 60-day IL, and will be sidelined 6-7 months.

W-L Record for Week 9: 4-2, .667
Overall Record: 30-27, .526
Position in Standings: In 6th Place in the Frick Heartland Division, 8.5 games behind Yellow Springs.

Hot Take
So, the big news was closer Gilberto Sosa, somehow, winning Pitcher of the Month for the Frick. Now, don’t get us wrong. We love Gilberto, Gil, Gillie, Bert, Bert-O … whatever term of endearment you wanna tag him with.

He’s excellent. The Sox are lucky to have him.

And, by any measure, he had a solid month: 5-0 with 5 saves, a 2.60 ERA, 20 Ks and 3 walks. He threw 17.1 innings and compiled 1.1 WAR.

Nice. But was he really the best pitcher in the league?

How about SP Luis Gracia of Sacramento: 2-1 record, 1.70 ERA over 37 IP, 23 Ks, 2 BBs and 1.3 WAR? Sure, he had a loss, but that’s a B.S. stat anyway,

Or Stopper Lorenzo de’Medici of Nashville: 0-1 with 2 saves, a 1.69 ERA over 32.0 IP, 62 Ks, 5 BBs and 1.2 WAR? Not too shabby, Abby!

We think you could make a nice case for either of those guys over Sosa in every statistical category except wins, losses and saves.

Which pretty much tells you the lens the League Office uses when it’s handing out awards: an old school lens. Give us those wins and losses and you can stuff your WAR and K/BB where the sun don’t shine.

But don’t get us wrong. Sosa is keeping the award and we’ll happily tip a few in his honor this weekend.

Long live Old School!
