Farm Fresh 2043, Vol. 1
April 1-May 4
Carolina Flight, AAA Even though they’re 19-13 on the season so far, we can’t help but feel this team is underperforming a bit given the talent on the roster.
Veteran 1B Emilio Lugo got off to a hot start in April, winning player of the week for the Granville League on April 13 with a .474 BA and 4 HRs, but has cooled considerably since then. On the season, Lugo is now slashing .237/.378/.588 with 8 homers and 21 RBIs.
Highly-regarded OF prospect Ricardo Torres, two-time AA Player of the Year, has struggled so far this season, slashing just .229/.298/.390 with 4 homers and 17 RBI.
Top SP prospect Romeu Tameiro leads the starting rotation, while last year’s No. 1 draft pick Gilberto Cordero anchors the bullpen. Tameiro is 4-1 on the season with a 3.19 ERA, 25 Ks and 9 BBs, while Cordero is 1-1 with 9 saves and a 3.86 ERA.

They ripped off a 5-game winning streak in early April, then dropped 7 in a row only to see them turn around and win 7 in a row.
So far, it all adds up to a slightly positive balance sheet: a 17-15 record in early May. Lackluster though it is, that record isn’t too far behind the pace set by last season’s Single A Championship team, which was 19-13 on May 4, 2042.
Bright spots so far include Jeremy Smith, who figures to pitch out of the bullpen in the majors but is starting in the minors to get some innings under his belt. So far this season, he’s 3-1 with a 1.03 ERA, 42 Ks and 16 BBs in 35 innings of work.
