Hot Take

If you’re anything like us, you look at the Sox bookending its Spring Training schedule with losses to Portland and think … “Ewwwww.” Hard to imagine a more revolting portent for the season ahead than that. Makes us faintly nauseous just to think of it. So, we won’t. Instead, we’ll adopt the wholly supportable outlook that there’s nowhere to go but up … The day-to-day injury (a moderate shoulder strain) to relief ace Francisco Salgado forced the team’s hand on one decision: the Sox have decided to start the season with two-way prospect Paul Kemp on the big league roster. Whether he stays there once Salgado comes off the injured list in a week is a decision the club will face when it gets there. Manager Julian Negrete said team trainers decided to put Salgado on the IL “out of an abundance of caution. Why risk having Francisco hurt himself further and get his season off to a bad start when Paul can fill in for him, and give us a nice bat in the lineup, too?” … Sox coaches were impressed with the spring of Jeffrey Cote, who plays 2B and 3B, but elected to keep Rule 5 bat Juan Solis on the roster, instead. “Although Juan didn’t have many at-bats in the second half of Spring Training, he did enough early on to convince us that the young man can hit,” said Negrete. “We’ll take him with us to Chicago and give him a chance to keep proving himself. We’re not committing to this for the entire season, mind you, but we still think Juan can help us at the plate against left-handers.” … Usually, at this point, we’d sum up some of the most impressive Spring Training stats and all that, but apparently the drunks the BBA hires to handle statistical duties for the spring spilled their wine coolers into the keyboard of their laptop and ended losing all the results from the first half. Probably for the best, anyway. If there’s no official record that the Sox went 4-11 to start ST, Negrete and crew can maintain plausible deniability. Or something like that. Well, that’s about it from here. We’ve got just enough time for one last mojito and a slice of key lime pie before we catch the flight back to Chicago … where it’s no doubt in the mid-40s with snow flurries and gale force winds off the lake. Damn it, Vinnie. Would it have killed you to build a domed stadium? See ya on Opening Day!
