Hot Take:

Yeah, we’re back, baby! Miss us? We missed you … or at least we missed the expense account lunches and mojitos at the Columbia Restaurant … So, how’d that first half of spring training go? Not so hot from the won-loss (4-11) standpoint, but pretty much as anticipated so far as getting our prospects some playing time. We liked what we saw out of Jeffrey Cote, a 2B who’s now trying to add 3B to his repertoire. He had a nice season in Beloit a year ago (.270/.386/.459), had a strong Florida Prospect League stint (.360/.467/.539), and kept things rolling in Spring Training. Somebody to keep an eye on … Paul Kemp, who got roughed up some in his three starts on the mound in Spring Training (1-2, 16.00 ERA), went 3-4 at the plate with a homer. He’s still likely to start the season in AAA, and then come up around the All-Star break, but the Sox aren’t entirely closing the door on their two-way star prospect starting the season in Chicago. He’ll move to the bullpen for the second half of spring training, though … Last year’s No. 1 draft pick, Gilberto Cordero, got off to a rocky start in his first couple of spring training appearances (allowing 2 runs in his first game, 1 in his second) but then settled down and finished the first half with a 1-1 record and 3.68 ERA. Club officials think he needs more seasoning and will start the year in AAA, but could be a late-season callup … Jorge Rivera and Jeremy Smith, two young relievers who pitched in Rookie League last year, looked good in their Spring Training stints. Both figure to pitch for Class A Grand Junction this season, but have done nothing to hurt their standing as top prospects … So, by our watch (just kidding, nobody wears watches anymore), Happy Hour is just about ready to start over at the Columbia and we would very much like to get happy. Which is our way of saying we’re done for now. But don’t worry, we’ll be back sooner than you’d hope!
