The Chicago Black Sox prevailed in four of the five arbitration cases they faced this offseason, losing only in the decision on a contract for catcher and team captain Diesel Dave.
“If we had to lose one of the cases, we’re glad it was the one involving Mr. Dave,” said Sox General Manager Benny Vitale. “He is a valued member of our team and, while we were comfortable with our proposal, we are not uncomfortable with the outcome of this case.”

“I’m sorry we ended up having to go this route, but I’m pleased with the decision,” Dave said. “I thought I had a pretty nice season – and I’m glad the arbitrator agreed. That said, no hard feelings. I’m ready to head to spring training and get ready for another playoff run!”
The Sox avoided their stickiest arbitration cases – with SP Amayas Moelling, SP/RP Luis Gonzáles, 2B Rocky Wattson, and RP Brian Smith – by signing contract extensions with each in advance of the hearing period.
Moelling signed for one year and $4.5 million; Wattson for one year and $4 million; Smith for one year and $900,000; and Gonzáles for one year and $3 million.
Team sources said the front office was concerned that arbitration rulings for Moelling and Wattson, in particular, could have been budget breakers.
“Better to get out in front of it than to have decisions handed down that could completely disrupt what we’re trying to get done,” one source said.
