The San Pedro de Macoris Green Sox this week announced that third baseman Ken Wear had won its Hitter of the Year award, edging out teammate Félix Cruz for the honor.

Wear, 20, of San Francisco, slashed .318/.416/.509 and hit 8 homers with 55 RBIs in 59 games for Chicago’s Short Season Class A affiliate this season.

Cruz, 21, of Puerto Rico, who also received strong consideration, slashed .304/.401/.462 with 8 home runs and 61 RBIs.

“They were close as could be and, truth be told, could easily share the award, but we checked with the front office in Chicago and they didn’t want to pay for two certificates,” said Manager Ernesto Garcia.

“That forced our hand, so we had to pick one and we felt Ken had maybe just a small edge, so we went with him.”

Wear was the second round pick for the Sox in the much-maligned 2041 draft, and he struggled mightily in his first season of pro ball with Monclova in the Rookie League: a .222/.258/.351 slashline and just 4 home runs.

The BBA Scouting Consortium still isn’t convinced that Wear is big league material, rating him as 20/35 for overall potential. They grade his skills as 4/4 for contact; 6/6 for gap power; 5/6 for home run power; 5/6 for plate discipline; and 6/6 for avoiding strikeouts.

“He has decent power now and has the chance for above average power in the future,” says Wear’s scouting report. “While his power offers enormous upside, he’ll likely be limited by his weak ability to make contact. Wear could be a borderline talent for a bench role.”

Wear shrugs off that evaluation, pointing out that he made immense progress between his Rookie League and Short A seasons.

“Look, all I can do is go out and play and work to get better,” he said. “If I do that, I’ve gotta believe things will work out.”

Wear likely will be named to Chicago’s team in the Florida Prospect League for additional instruction, and figures to be playing next season for the Grand Junction Gold Sox in Single A.
