The San Pedro de Macoris Green Sox have named 18-year-old right-hander Daniel González as their Pitcher of the Year for the 2042 season.

González, of Telica, Nicaragua, was 6-4 with a 3.07 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 15 games and 85 innings for the Green Sox, finishing second in the balloting for the Drake Sub-League 2 Outstanding Pitcher Award.

“Daniel was someone we could count on for a solid outing every time he took the mound,” said Pitching Coach Roberto Amador. “I have no doubt that he’s going to have a nice career and, one day, pitch in the BBA.”

The BBA Scouting Consortium doesn’t seem quite as convinced, though.

González, who was taken by Chicago in the 9th Round of the 2042 draft, is rated as 30/45 for his overall potential. Scouts grade his skills as 6/7 for his stuff; 4/6 for pitch movement; and 3/4 for his control.

“He has great raw stuff,” his scouting report says, “although his command is still coming around. Gonzalez seems like he’s more suited for mop up duty; not really a high leverage kind of guy.”

Told of that evaluation, González smirked.

“I don’t know,” he said. “Seems like this nice ‘Pitcher of the Year’ certificate begs to differ, you know?”

González likely will be pitching in the Florida Prospect League this fall, and is certain to be moving on to Class A Grand Junction next season.

“Mr. González has our attention now,” said Benny Vitale, general manager of the Chicago Black Sox. “We thought well enough of him to choose him in the draft, and he seems to have vindicated that decision. Now, we’ll be watching carefully as he continues his journey through our minor league system.”
