Hot Take

Pardon us if we’re wrong, but is that Pepe Jaramillo on a bit of a hot streak for the Black Sox? And is Juan Nicto on a bit of a tear himself?

Well, tie us down and beat us silly with a Jon Reed Messy Burrito, but that appears to be the case: Jaramillo actually showed up in our “Hero of the Week” feature this week, and Nicto nearly did. Jaramillo pitched two excellent games last week (including a 1-0 heartbreak loss to Omaha), and Nicto is 1-0 with a 1.35 ERA over his last 13.1 innings. His ERA, in fact, has been dropping steadily over the past month, and now is an exceedingly respectable 4.12. His FIP is still a worrisome 5.20, but that’s also down considerably from the stratospheric numbers he posted early in the year.

If those two guys can keep going, there may be hope yet …

Yeah, yeah, I know. We’re cockeyed optimists, but we can’t help but get a little dewy-eyed thinking about the rotation with functional 4- and 5-spot pitchers in it.

Also, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the absurd performance (see Heroes of the Week for details) just turned in by 2B Rocky Wattson – good enough to earn him the Frick Player of the Week award.

Nice going, mustache man!
