San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic – The San Pedro de Macoris Green Sox lost their best position player for the rest of the year to a severe hamstring injury, but still managed to eke out a 4-3 record in Week Seven of their Short Season A schedule.
Emilio Moran, who slashed .318/.453/.486 with 7 homers and 36 RBIs through the first 40 games, strained his hamstring during a July 11 home game versus Port au Prince. He will be lost for five weeks, basically the rest of the regular season.
He will be replaced in the lineup, at least for now, by Felipe Olvera, a 22-year-old infield prospect with limited potential.
“This is a disappointing blow to the team because Emilio was off to such a great start,” said manager Ernesto Garcia. “Now all we can say is ‘Next man up,’ and that man is Felipe. We’re confident he’ll do an excellent job.”
Olvera currently is slashing .250/.313/.333 in 9 games of action.
