Good stuff from the first half:
- 2B Rocky Wattson has taken some nice steps in his development, has hit pretty well (.271/.330/.563), has hit for power (24, on pace for 44), and played a nice 2B (+2.4 ZR). He made his first All-Star team.
- OF Hao Hang has been everything we hoped: .307/.390/.631 slash line, 25 homers, 68 RBIs, and 3.8 WAR (on pace for 7). He ain’t god’s gift to fielding, but that isn’t why he’s here, either. He also made his first All-St team.
- So far, at least, the trade of DH Tommy Cochran for LF José Figueroa and Henry Jones III has worked out well. Figueroa is slashing .303/.353/.523 with 5 homers and 14 RBIs since coming over, while Jones is slashing .320/.375/.480 with 2 homers and 10 RBIs. It’s kind of an unfair comparison, but let’s stack that offensive output against Cochran’s since he left: .307/.403/.535 with 5 homers and 21 RBIs. Cochran, of course, is hitting well, because that’s what he does. But Figueroa and Jones are more than keeping pace. So far, at least, it looks like the deal is panning out for both sides.
- Pepe Jaramillo, who went from last season’s Black Sox Pitcher of the Year to this season’s player who fans would most like to dump into Lake Michigan. His first half stats are breathtaking: a 1-7 W-L record; a 6.95 ERA; a 6.14 FIP; 4.6 walks per 9 innings; and a .280 opponents BA. He makes last season’s pig manure spill in Yellow Springs seem like a whiff of Chanel No. 5.
- Francisco Salgado, a guy who the scouts rate as a 75/80 talent with 11/11 stuff and potential to be a top closer. Let’s square that against an 0-6-1 record, a 5.64 ERA and a 4.65 FIP. He’s back on the big league roster now after a three-week stint in AAA to get his, uh, stuff together. We’ll see how it goes from here.
- The Sox have a 1-6 record against Louisville so far, and are 3-8 against Yellow Springs. The only bright spot is they only have three games left against the YS9 and seven against the Sluggers. When those guys show up on the schedule, you can just pencil in the “L”.
