Beloit, Wis. – The Beloit Blue Sox launched their AA Warren Cox League championship defense with a 4-2 week that left them tied for first place with two other teams in the Donaldo League Mid-Central Division.
The Sox opened with a home series against the Weymouth Irish (Boise), taking three of four games before taking to the road for an away series against the New Bern Bears (Charlotte). Beloit split the first two of the three-game set to close out the week.
“We’ll take it,” said Javier Montero, who was named Manager of the Year in the Black Sox system after winning the Cox league title. “Any week you having a winning record is, by definition, a good week.”
Among the stars for the week was left fielder Danny Bennett, who slashed .333/.545/.800 with 2 homers and 4 RBIs. Two-way star Paul Kemp also had a nice start, slashing .318/.360/.500 with a double, 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored.
On the mound, SP Rameu Tameiro impressed in his first start of the year, going 6.1 innings and allowing just three hits and 1 run en route to a no-decision. Beloit eventually won the April 3 game against Weymouth 3-2 in the bottom of the 9th.
