What, you thought we’d take the spring off? We’re insulted. We're wounded. We’re also afraid of Benny Vitale, so we’re trying to show we’re “Value Added” by doing Spring Training this year. Not to mention that the Columbia Restaurant on St. Armands Circle makes a mean mojito … But that' not why we're here. No, this is serious value-freakin'-added baseball commentary that everyone, including the Kocherschmeltz Group, will find illuminating, right guys? No, no. Put away the orange pen, get out that nice “excellent” blue one … OK, a couple of early takeaways here: that experiment with Tomás Durán batting leadoff? Looks like that one’s getting some nice results: .448 OBP, 10 hits, 7 runs, 8 RBIs. So far, so good … Less obvious is whether rookie David Bates is doing enough to make the rotation out of spring training, but we’re here to argue “yes” despite the 5.56 ERA. He got roughed up by Portland in his last start; but before that, he turned in two strong games. One rough outing shouldn’t bar him from making the big club, right? Although it was against Portland … so maybe we oughta drop him into Sarasota Bay and see if anything shows up to snack on him, right? Oh relax, Bates. We kid because we love. But don't let it happen again … One other young pitcher everyone’s keeping an eye on is starter Andresa Frederico, and he’s turned some heads already: 2 starts, 1-1 record, 2.25 ERA, 9 Ks, 3 walks. Could the Sox have two rookie starters in the rotation coming out of Spring Training? How big is that rotation gonna be, anyway? OK. Look, if we go on much longer here, we’re gonna miss happy hour, which will make us very cranky. So, we’re outta here. If you run into the K-Group fellas, though, tell ‘em your color code for this report was bright blue and that we added some outstanding value.
