Sox Scoops 42.017 Briefing for Benny: Catchers

About: The Catchers

I got your note. Sorry there was a gap in my briefing memos, Benny. And, no, it wasn't because I ran out of Geritol. It won't happen again …

Today, we'll look at our catching corps:

Catchers
CatcherLevelOvr/PotContactGapHR PowerEyeAvoid K'sPos. RatingAbilityArm
Diesel DaveMajors65/655/56/69/92/22/2878
Hotha PopoMajors50/504/44/44/49/107/7887
Spencer HillsonAAA40/555/56/63/56/65/5677
Dani SantosAAA35/404/46/64/44/45/5276
Pablo MontalvanAA25/403/46/64/46/64/4273
Pete SánchezA25/404/45/55/57/74/4145
Brooks BuckA20/404/45/54/46/64/4177
As you can see, we're decidedly top-heavy with our catchers: our major league duo is capable, and we've got a decent prospect who's been developing steadily in AAA. Below that … whoa.

The good news, though, is that Diesel Dave is young, and when Popo either opts out of his contract at the end of this year or we give him a little … um … shove, Hillson is just a youngster. So, we should be in pretty good shape there for the foreseeable future. One thing we do need to get, either through the draft or free agency at some point, are a couple of really strong defensive guys. Dave, Popo and Hillson are all average-to-above-average, but we don't have any defensive depth to speak of at this position.

Montalvan, in AA, really isn't a prospect for us, but I include him because he won player of the year in Short Season A a couple of years ago. He flashes some ability here and there, but he'll never play in the majors.

Sánchez and Buck both had solid years in Short Season for us in 2041 (in fact, Buck was San Pedro's player of the year), so we're keeping an eye on them, but both are the longest of long shots for a major league role.

Within the next couple of years, we need to find a young catching stud or two who can start working their ways through our system.

I think catcher is a tough spot to draft. Either they're top tier and selected in the first or second rounds... or they're truly awful and can be scooped up late... but, having quality catchers with goo ability through an organization is important. One could surmise it would help with pitcher development... at least on the confidence side of things...

Life is a bit more beautiful when time is measured by the half inning rather than the half hour.

Yeah, I'm stuck drafting in the teens - we're not good enough to be, well, good, or bad enough to get good draft position. So … will probably look for some good defensive guys and settle for lousy hitting. Maybe they could be late-inning replacements to help the bullpen guys, if nothing else.
