Grand Junction, Colo. – The Grand Junction Gold Sox enjoyed All Star Week, going 3-1 and grabbing a few days of rest.
Well, everyone except for Juan Benítez, that is: The 20-year-old center fielder from Puerto Rico was Grand Junction’s lone representative on the All-Star squad for the Provost Sub-League.
Benítez started in left for the June 11 game, which went to extra innings and was won by the Baxter Sub-League squad in the top of the 16th triple, an RBI single, and a 2-run homer. RP Felipe Montero of the Springdale Roosters (Nashville) took the loss, while RP Okba Shaabani of the Toledo Liberty (Phoenix) picked up the win.
Jack Cox, 1B with the Long Island Legion (Atlantic City) was named Player of the Game. He went 1-1 with a 2-run homer in the 5th inning.
For his part, Benítez went 0-2 in the contest before being lifted for a pinch hitter.
