Game 1 Notables: So, when you’ve been beaten to miserable pulp in the middle of bum frickin’ Ohio, what’s the best antidote to your pain and suffering? How about a visit to the Aloha State? Yeah, baby … Oh, the Sox played some baseball, too, and that actually went OK. Take this game, for example: SP Luis Gonzáles threw a decent game, going 5.1 innings, allowing 3 hits, 1 run and 0 walks while striking out 5. PQS Score: 3 … then, SS Mark Wareham went 2-4 with a couple of runs scored; DH Tommy Cochran went 2-4 with a double and 2 RBIs; and rookie 3B Tomás Durán, called up at the end of last week from AAA, went 2-4 and hit his first BBA home run in the 6th inning, a solo shot off RP Adrián García … This game was notable for one other first, too: Rookie closer Gilberto Sosa went 1.2 innings, and gave up his first run of the year. In fact, the first run of his BBA career. He’s now 1-0 with 11 saves and an ERA of 0.54 on the season. Not too shabby … Player of the Game: Luis Gonzáles … Cliché of the Game: "Throwing strikes was the main thing," Gonzáles said. We want to say something sarcastic, but we’ve got nothin’. We’ll go ahead and agree that throwing strikes is a fine idea.
Game 2 Notables: Tips of the hat to Catcher Diesel Dave, who went 2-4 in this one, with a home run, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBIs, and to LF Fernando Reyes, who crushed a line-drive opposite-field homer to left in the 10th inning to give Chicago the win … Closer Gilberto Sosa recovered from allowing his first run the night before to come in and throw a scoreless 10th and pick up the save … Player of the Game: Diesel Dave … Cliché of the Game: "We'll grab a cold one tonight and go after another win tomorrow," Dave said. Damn right you will, Diesel.
In Sum: After absorbing a beating at the hands of the top teams in the Frick Heartland, it was nice to visit the Frick Pacific and recover a little. Hey Pacific: Ya burnt!
