Game 1 Notables: Not an auspicious debut for new SP Pepe Jaramillo. He was rocked for 5 hits, 5 runs and 3 walks in just 3.0 innings as he finished his day with a loss and a 15.00 ERA. Needless to say, his PQS was a nice round 0. Nowhere to go but up, right? … The Sox kept it close, though, thanks in large part to another new acquisition, SS Mark Wareham. He went 2-3 with 2 walks and a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 2nd inning … 1B Mark Simpson and CF Jim Lorenzen each added homers, too … Player of the Game: Mark Wareham … Cliché of the Game: “I like the grit if this ballclub,” said Nataneal Barral, Madison 1B, who hit a bases-clearing double in the top of the 1st.

Game 2 Notables: 1B Mark Simpson shows no sign of the ankle injury that sidelined him for the second half of last season, as he went 1-2 with his third homer of the young season and 2 walks to help pace the Chicago offense … SS Mark Wareham had another strong game, too, going 2-5 with a homer, a run scored and 2 RBIs … DH Tommy Cochran had a solo homer, too … SP Luis Gonzáles got off to a decent start, going 4.0 innings and allowing 4 hits, 1 run and 0 walks while striking out 5. He ran up against his pitch count limit (imposed to help protect his health this season), but still managed a PQS of 3 … Player of the Game: Mark Simpson … Cliché of the Game: “We’ll relax tonight and get back after it tomorrow,” said Chicago 3B Luis González, who hit an RBI single in the 2nd inning.

Game 3 Notables: It wasn’t a thing of beauty, but Amayas Moelling’s second start of the season was a bit better than his first (where he allowed 7 runs in 3 IP). In this game, he went 7.0 innings, allowed 6 hits, 4 runs and 3 walks while striking out 3. He picked up the win and notched a PQS of 3 … 2B Rocky Wattson paced the offense with a 2-4 performance, including a 2-run homer in the 5th … Rookie closer Gilberto Sosa notched the first save of his BBA career, pitching a scoreless 9th and striking out 2 … Player of the Game: Rocky Wattson … Cliché of the Game: “Win or lose, we pick each other up in this clubhouse,” Wattson said. Which begs the question: what are they all doing on the floor?

In Sum: Nice to take a series, and against a division opponent, no less. The starters still seem a bit wobbly, but the bullpen has been solid, as expected. And Wareham has been terrific to start the season, coming out of the gate with a .304/.429/.565 slash line. Mark Simpson has had a nice start, too (.375/.500/1.000), and 3B Luis González is teasing a possible return to hitting form with a .391/.440/.522 start. Still, the Sox will need DH/1B’s Tommy Cochran and Aarnoud Budding to get untracked if they hope to make any noise in the division. Stay tuned …
