Chicago Black Sox officials on Monday announced a significant expansion to their Hall of Honor and Museum, which was built on land near the team’s stadium in Calumet City.

“We’ve added three new halls to the museum – one documenting significant ‘firsts’ at Black Sox Park, One honoring team award winners, and a third documenting the franchise moves from Chicago to Huntsville and back again,” said General Manager Vic Caleca.

The so-called “Hall of Firsts” documents such events as the first hit at the new ballpark, the first grand slam home run, and a slew of other notables.

“We’ve been collecting these events and documenting them since the season started with an eye towards creating this exhibit,” said Mazy Arbuckle, director of the museum.

The exhibit for team awards spotlights the new Hitter of the Year, Pitcher of the Year, and Newcomer of the Year honors bestowed annually by the Black Sox and their minor league affiliates.

“These awards honor the top players on the big league club and throughout our system, and we felt it was only right they should be a part of our Hall of Honor,” Caleca said.

“I mean, who else is keeping track of what’s up with the Monclova Aqua Sox?”

The Special Exhibits Hall, which includes the material about the team’s relocations, includes a variety of media accounts that document how the moves occurred and reaction to them.

Workers put finishing touches on the exhibits over the weekend, and they opened to the public on Monday.

Caleca said the museum parking lots will not be impacted by the fall and winter use of Black Sox Park as an overflow impound lot for owner Vinnie Vitale’s towing business.

“Visitors will have no problem finding spots,” Caleca said. “Of course, they’ll need to be careful about parking between the lines – Vinnie’s guys take proper parking etiquette seriously, and violators will be towed.”
