W: B. Smith (4-1) L: D. Lindt (7-4) S: J. Alfonzo (4).

Game 1 Notables: SP Juan Nicto pitched a gem to help shut down the Long Beach offense, going 6.1 innings while allowing 4 hits, 0 runs, and 3 walks while striking out 6. PQS score: 4 … A solo homer by DH Tommy Cochran in the 7th and a run-scoring single by 1B Emilio Lugo in the 6th accounted for all the scoring in this one … Player of the Game: Juan Nicto … Cliché of the Game: “I’m just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well, and not try to do too much,” said Emilio Lugo. Given that you’re only hitting .240 on the year, we wouldn’t mind if you’d at least try to do more, if not too much …

Game 2 Notables: Chicago locked down the series sweep with a little … well, a lot … of help from 3B Luis González. He went 4 for 4 and lacked only a triple to hit for the cycle. González had 2 runs and 3 RBIs … 2B Rocky Wattson also had a nice day, going 2-4 with a double and homer … Player of the Game: Luis González … Cliché of the Game: “One win at a time, one game at a time. We try not to get too far ahead of ourselves,” González said. As with so many of these quotes, we’re going to need to get our content analysis team working on this to figure out what he was trying to say. Our guess, though, is that it will turn out to be inane.

In Sum: The Black Sox are a cruel mistress. They have, once again, brought us to the precipice of .500: just one game below. Surely, they can muster the last-minute resolve to top the summit and proudly embrace mediocrity, can’t they? If past is prologue, then the answer here is a resounding: are you drunk? Of course not. Let’s kick back, shall we, and see what inventive ways the Sox can come up with to gack this all away down the stretch. Don’t forget your popcorn, but don’t choke. The Sox will take care of that for you …
