The Chicago Black Sox have acquired reliever [urlhttps://statspl.us/brewster/reports/news/html/players/player_33834.html]Juan Canó[/url] from the waiver wire, adding a bit of pitching depth for the final month of the season.

Sox Asst. GM Bill McGuffin said Canó was added when it became clear that Chicago’s AAA team might be involved in the Rupert Horn Memorial League’s playoffs.

“We don’t want to be calling players up from AAA to play out the string in Chicago when they can make an impact in Carolina’s post-season play,” he said.

With 5 games left on its schedule, the Carolina Flight have a 3-game lead over Annapolis and Orlando for the wild card spot in the Granville Sub-League.

Canó, a 28-year-old right-hander, was claimed from Boise on August 26, although he started the season with Charm City. For the year, Canó is 4-4 with no saves, an ERA of 6.87 and a FIP of 5.83.

“Not exactly world-beating numbers, that’s for sure,” said Sox pitching coach Art Messer, “but our scouts think he has potential and we thought it was worth taking a look.”

Scouts rate Canó’s stuff at 6/9; his pitch movement at 7/7; and his control at 5/5. They love his fastball, rating it a 10/10, but are less enamored of his 4/9 slider.

“Yeah, it’s worrisome that at age 28 his slider hasn’t developed more than it has, but we’d like to see how he does in our park,” Messer said.

“If nothing else, maybe he can eat some relief innings for us.”
