Game 1 Notables: After slumbering most of the game, the Sox offense woke up in the bottom of the 9th as Chicago scored twice to steal a win from Louisville. PH Tim Torres was hit by a pitch, stole 2B, advanced to third on a flyball, then was doubled home by Catcher Diesel Dave to tie the score. A couple of batters later, RF Manny Cleide singled Dave home for the win … Reliever Brian Smith threw 3.2 innings of scoreless ball with no hits or walks to pick up the win … Player of the Game: Augusto Sánchez, Louisville SP, who went 7.0 innings, allowing 5 hits, 1 run, and 1 walk while striking out 8. PQS score: 5 … Cliché of the Game: “I just try to see the ball and put a good swing on it,” said Manny Cleide.

Game 2 Notables: If the Game 1 win was grand larcency, this one was at least petty theft. The Sox clawed their way back from a 7-3 deficit to tie the score at 7 in the 9th, and then rode 3 innings of shutout relief from Frits Brinson into the 13th where 2B Rocky Wattson ended things with a walk-off homer … Player of the Game: Rocky Wattson, who was 3-6 with a triple and 2 homers (including the game-winner) … Cliché of the Game: “Our team showed some spunk,” Wattson said. Dontcha just hate spunk?

Game 3 Notables: Now here are the Sox we know and loathe: a fine start from Amayas Moelling that goes to total waste because Chicago can’t hit its way out of a paper bag. Moelling went 6.1 innings, allowing 5 hits, 3 runs, and 0 walks with 9 Ks. PQS score: 4 … Player of the Game: Luis Flores, RP for Louisville who pitched 5 innings of 2-hit shutout ball to pick up the win … Cliché of the Game: “Baseball is about momentum, and we feel we’ve got it in our favor after that win,” said Louisville RF Semei Kwakou, who had a 2-run homer in the 3rd inning. Maybe get, say, two wins in a row before you start spouting off about momentum there, Semei.

Game 4 Notables: Welcome back to the rotation, François Mangin! This was the first start for the 25-year-old right-hander since going down with a strained triceps on July 7. He’d made a couple of relief appearances since coming back from the IL and looked good, so manager Bret Richards put him back into the rotation. Mangin responded with a decent outing, by going 5.0 innings and allowing 4 hits, 1 run, and 3 walks to pick up the win. His PQS score: 2 … DH Tommy Cochran hit his 27th homer of the year in the 4th to highlight the offense … Player of the Game: François Mangin … Cliché of the Game: “I’m just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well,” said Tommy Cochran, “and not try to do too much.” Heaven knows, we wouldn’t want you to do too much, Tommy.

In Sum: This seems like the start of another Sox setup. Play well for a stretch. Win a series or two, start closing in on .500, and then collapse in a heap. Well, we’re not getting sucked in this time. We refuse to daydream about the heady heights of .500, or what it would be like to climb into fourth place and look down at those 5th place losers a whole game behind us … Wait, what’re we doing? Stop that!
