Black Sox Solve Bears, 6-2
W: A. Salcido (2-0) L: S. Hopkins (12-7) .
HR - CHI: L. González (9), J. Lorenzen (15)

08/23/40: San Fernando Bears @ Chicago Black Sox - Loss, 8-4.
Black Sox Lose to Bears, 8-4
W: K. Zeitler (9-8) L: M. Peña (6-10) .
HR - SFB: B. Okorafor (29) CHI: T. Cochran (26), M. Cleide (12)

Game 1 Notables: SP Amayas Moelling went 4.1 decent innings, but ran up against his pitch count limit (imposed with the temporary switch to a 4-man rotation) and left before he could pick up the win. Still, he kept the Sox in position to take the game: 4.1 IP, 3 hits, 1 run, 3 Ks, 1 BB. PQS score: 3 … 3B Luis González and CF Jim Lorenzen provided the offensive spark – which is a sentence you haven’t seen much this season. González was 2-3 with a homer and 2 walks, while Lorenzen had a double and his 15th home run of the season … Player of the Game: Luis González … Cliché of the Game: “We took advantage of our opportunities,” Lorenzen said. “It’s as simple as that.”

Game 2 Notables: After a string of acceptable starts, Manuel Peña screwed the pooch in this one: 2.0 IP, 4 hits, 5 runs, 5 walks, 1 K. PQS score: 1 … DH Tommy Cochran had a good game in the loss, going 2-4 with his 22nd double and 26th home run of the season … Player of the Game: Knud Zeitler, SFB SP, who went 9 innings, allowing 5 hits, 4 runs and 1 walk while striking out 9. PQS score: 4 … Cliché of the Game: “Knud is tough when he’s hitting his spots,” said SFB manager Abe Colbert. Knud. Heh, heh.

In Sum: Well, at least it wasn’t a sweep. Sox fans need to be grateful for small favors at this point. When September hits (assuming Carolina doesn’t make the AAA playoffs), look for most of the starters to take a seat while the front office test drives some of the youngsters with an eye towards next season. If Carolina does make the playoffs, we’ll at least give the Raúl Gascos of the world a last chance to make an impression before we decide their offseason fates.
