Sox Scoops 40.152: "Attendance Trends Update"

As of mid-August, the Black Sox have drawn 2,231,501 fans to their new home, with an average attendance of 33,811 per game. That means the team has sold roughly 96 percent of the available seats for its 55 home games through August 13.
Following earlier trends, there have been some dips in attendance occurred when out-of-division rivals visited. Before August, crowds dropped below 34,000 only 9 times, and all but one of those games involved Pacific Division teams. The sole exception was a Monday game in May against Yellow Springs that drew 33,416.
An alarming trend occurred at the very end of July and early August - a time period that coincided both with a losing skid by the Sox, the re-injury to star first baseman Mark Simpson that sidelined him for the year, and publicity about the "pig poop dump" into the Little Calumet River.
That prompted Chicago's front office to drop ticket prices from $20 to $18 (last season's price point), and resulted in a return to the 34,000 attendance level for the Omaha series from Aug. 11-13. This, of course, was helped by the buzz surrounding Amayas Moelling's no-hitter on the 11th.
We will continue to monitor this trend, but the Sox clearly hope the price drop will continue to boost attendance through the end of the season.
If the Sox keep drawing at the current rate, they would still be on pace for a season attendance of more than 2.7 million. To repeat our previous caveat: that's not close to the team's all-time attendance record of 4,572,497 - set in 2014 - but the new Black Sox Park is considerably smaller than its old stadium. Even if every game at Sox park was a complete sellout, the team could only draw 2,835,000.
Chicago Sports Online will update these charts periodically to keep track of how the Sox are drawing as the season progresses.
