It wasn’t a shutout, and it wasn’t a win.

But Romeu Tameiro’s last start of the abbreviated Rookie League season for the Monclova Aqua Sox was still impressive: a complete game 1-0 loss against Chestermere in which he allowed 5 hits and no walks and struck out 4.

Over his last 3 starts, then, the Brazilian 18-year-old threw a 2-hit shutout, a 3-hit shutout, and a 1-run 5-hitter.

Not too shabby.

“To close out with three consecutive complete games – and allow just 1 run in 26 innings of work – is pretty impressive,” said Monclova pitching coach Fernando Álvarez. “Romeu has set himself up for next season quite nicely, I would say.”

Tameiro finished his Rookie League campaign with a 4-9 record, a 3.62 ERA, 63 strikeouts and 19 Ks. His FIP was 2.92 and he compiled a WAR of 2.1.

Given his age, it’s almost certain that Chicago will ticket Tameiro for Class A Grand Junction – although some thought might be given to AA Beloit, as well.

Wherever he goes, it’s certain the Sox front office will be keeping close watch on his progress.

Tameiro was the franchise’s first round pick in the 2040 amateur draft, and part of a draft class that many around the league derided as weak.

Chicago didn’t necessarily see it that way.

“Tameiro was someone we actively wanted to draft and then wanted to sign,” said Asst. General Manager Bill McGuffin. “We offered more than Romeu was even asking because we wanted to get him in-house, and we wanted him to feel wanted.

“Now, you can see why we felt that way.”

For his part, Tameiro is just looking forward to next season.

“I’m sorry the year is over – I felt like I had finally figured things out and was going good when the season ended,” he said.

“All I can say is, ‘Bring on next year!’ I can hardly wait.”

At times, I think this last draft class may surprise us. But, then I remember they're all playing against one another in Rookie Ball.

Yeah - although I think there are a few who might do OK. Tameiro's skill potentials aren't tremendous, but they're pretty solid. I could see him being a 3-4-5 starter at some point.
