The Monclova Aqua Sox were eliminated last week from postseason play in the Spike Nolan Rookie League.

Although Monclova went 7-3 over its last 10 games, that was nowhere near enough, as the Agua Sox had drifted to 9 games behind Ogden in the Mexican-American Division with just 5 games left to play.

On the morning of Aug. 4, Monclova stood at 30-33 on the season.

“We gave it a good run,” said first-year manager Elliott Bilodeau. “We just didn’t quite have the firepower we needed to contend with the division leaders.”

Chicago’s rookie league affiliate, in fact, ranked in the second division in virtually all offensive and defensive categories.

Bright spots were few and far between, although a late season surge by pitching prospect Romeu Tameiro – the Black Sox’s first pick in the 2039 draft – had the front office taking notice.

“Tameiro closed strong,” said GM Vic Caleca. “If that’s the only good news out of this season for Monclova, well, we’ll take it. We’re expecting big things out of Romeu.”

Although the team won’t award its hitter or pitcher of the year awards until the season has officially ended, Tameiro has a shot chance at recognition, although 8th round selection Felipe Méndez had a fine season on the mound, too. Catcher Pablo Montalvan, a round 11 pick in the draft out of the Dominican Republic, is a strong candidate for the offensive award.
