The Black Sox suffered another devastating injury to a pitcher during the team’s short road trip to Seattle when surprising young relief pitcher Raúl Jaramillo tore ligaments in his pitching elbow.

Jaramillo, who was not considered one of the team’s top pitching prospects going into the year, had put together a nice season since being called up from AAA Carolina on May 25.
The 20-year-old right-hander was 2-0 with a 2.14 ERA in 33.2 IP, while pitching in long- and middle-relief.
Chicago replaced him on the roster with Austin Stinson, who was signed as a free agent on July 30. Stinson’s last action was with AAA New Jersey (Montreal) in 2038.
Stinson will pitch in long relief and serve as a spot starter.
Although the Sox have a number of highly-regarded relief pitching prospects, the front office decided to let them continue developing through the end of their respective minor league seasons.
“The Sox aren’t going anywhere this year, and it seems short-sighted to call up kids to face BBA hitting when they’re not quite ready,” said Asst. GM Bill McGuffin. “Stinson was available, our scouts think he’ll be able to help out … and if he can’t, well, nothing in particular lost.”
Sox pitchers have been living on the disabled list this year. Among the serious injuries:
- SP François Mangin, who went down for 5 weeks with a strained triceps on July 7.
- SP Vito Reyes, who tore his UCL on May 5 and was lost for 13 months.
