Game 1 Notables: RP Justin Archer, just recalled from AAA Carolina to help an injury-depleted pitching staff, instead helped throw the game away. In the top of the 8th, he gave a double and a walk before yielding to RP Juan Alfonso who then gave up a 3-run homer to C Hedde Veenman, which was pretty much the ballgame … CF Jim Lorenzen went 2-4 with a 2-run homer, his 13th of the season … Player of the Game: Portland SP Fernand Richard, who pitched 8.0 innings, giving up 8 hits, 4 runs and 0 walks while striking out 4. His PQS score: 2 … Cliché of the Game: “We’ll savor this win, then get ready for the next game,” said Hedde Veenman.
Game 2 Notables: Portland SP Ernie Kinney shut down the Sox offense to the tune of 3 hits (2 singles and a double), no runs, and no walks. PQS score: 4 … The only offensive highlight, if you want to call it that, was CF Jim Lorenzen boosting his batting average (and we’re using the term loosely) to .188 … SP Amayas Moelling, throwing on a pitch count necessitated by injuries to other starters, went 4.2 innings, allowing 5 hits, 3 runs and 3 walks while striking out 4. PQS score: 0 … Player of the Game: Ernie Kinney … Cliché of the Game: “It feels good to be wearing a Portland Lumberjacks jersey today,” said Kinney. Gag. I think I may throw up.
Game 3 Notables: This extra-innings loss was pegged directly to closer Pavel Bure, Jr. who loaded the bases with two singles and a walk, then walked in what proved to be the winning run … LF Fernando Reyes had a 2-run homer in the 5th that, temporarily, put the Sox in the lead … Player of the Game: Fernando Reyes … Cliché of the Game: “I’m proud of the boys for pulling through,” said Portland Manager Tarafah bin Bahir. “The wins don’t come easy for this team, but everyone’s got an extra jump in their step after a game like this.” OK. Not sure I would want to subject that quote to much content analysis, but OK.
Game 4 Notables: A big game from DH Tommy Cochran helped snap Chicago’s 4-game losing streak. Cochran went 3-3, with 2 homers, a double, a walk, 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored … C Hotha Popo also chipped in a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 2nd … SP Juan Nicto picked up his 13th win of the year, going 5.1 innings while allowed 2 hits, 1 run and 2 walks. PQS score: 3 … Player of the Game: Tommy Cochran … Cliché of the Game: “Win or lose, we pick each other up in this clubhouse,” Cochran said.
In Sum: The loss of 1B Mark Simpson and 3 starting pitchers to injuries is taking a toll, along with a generally anemic offense. Losing 3 of 4 to Portland – Portland! – is simply unacceptable. Heads would roll, except much of the team is already on the injured list … Note to self: add a paragraph about “depth” to The Blueprint™.
