Game 1 Notables: After a couple of bad outings, SP Amayas Moelling rights the ship, throwing 8.0 innings of 2-hit, 1-run ball, striking out 5 and walking 1. PQS score: 5 … 1B Mark Simpson chips in a run-scoring double, while CF Jim Lorenzen smacks an RBI triple to help provide some offense … Player of the Game: Amayas Moelling … Cliché of the Game: “You can’t get too high when things go well, or too low when things go bad,” Moelling said. “Right now, I’m just happy we got the win.” Moelling will get to test that whole high/low theory, because the Sox are about to go subterranean …

Game 2 Notables: Lackluster pitching? Check. Virtually invisible offense? Check. Porous defense? Double check. The Sox, once again, show they can’t stand prosperity. They inched to within a game of .500, and promptly choked it away – and this game was the start. SP Juan Nicto went just 5.1 innings, allowing 7 hits and 4 runs (3 earned) for a PQS score of 1 … The offense mustered just 3 hits off California starter Luis Gracia (PQS: 4). Thankfully, one was a 2-run homer by 1B Mark Simpson or the Sox would have thrown up a goose egg … Third inning errors by SS Santiago Morales and 3B Luis González led to the go-ahead run scoring … and that, folks, is how you lose a game, Black Sox style … Player of the Game: Luis Gracía … Cliché of the Game: Chicago manager Bret Richards said he was “mildly disappointed” by the loss. “We had our opportunities, but we didn’t take advantage of them.” And you’re only mildly disappointed? Maybe that’s part of the problem …

Game 3 Notables: SP Manuel Peña pitched a fairly putrid game (4.0 IP, 4 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks, 3 Ks and a PQS of 1), but the Sox got a fine, 4-inning relief appearance from Brian Smith, who allowed 0 runs, 1 hit and 2 walks. Unfortunately, Chicago couldn’t mount much of an offense (other than three singles by 1B Mark Simpson and a handful of other hits scattered through the lineup) … Player of the Game: Jaime Mercado, California SP, who went 7 innings, allowed 8 hits and 2 runs. PQS score: 4 … Cliché of the Game: Mercado called the win “a collective effort.”

Game 4 notables: And this game was the cherry on top of the crap sundae that was this series … Sure, the Sox lost. Sure SP Alejandro Soto kinda stunk up the joint with a PQS 1 outing. And, sure, the offense took another day off. That all sucks and added up to a big fat L. But the black hole of suck in this game was 1B Mark Simpson tearing ligaments in his ankle and heading for a 4-week stay on the Injured List. We couldn’t leave the Golden State behind fast enough …

In Sum: Really? See above …
