06/19/40: California Crusaders @ Chicago Black Sox - Win, 3-5.
Black Sox Subdue California, 5-3
W: F. Brinson (4-3) L: T. Simonnet (0-2) S: P. Bure, Jr. (13).
HR - CHI: T. Torres (1)

06/20/40: California Crusaders @ Chicago Black Sox - Loss, 8-6.
Crusaders Prevail, 8-6, Over Chicago
W: M. Vitalle (5-3) L: A. Moelling (6-5) S: T. Simonnet (1).
HR - CAL: Y. Kobayashi (13), D. Pris (6), N. Bruce (4) CHI: H. Popo (7), J. Lorenzen (10)

Game 1 Notables: Chicago ran its winning streak to 3 games, thanks to a late comeback sparked by LF Tim Torres, who hit a solo homer in the bottom of the 8th to give the Sox a lead … SP François Mangin pitched a nice game, but didn’t get the win because RP Frits Brinson blew a save opportunity in the top of the 8th. Mangin threw 7 innings, allowing 0 runs on 6 hits and 1 walk. He struck out 8 and had a PQS score of 5 … Showing just how meaningless W/L records can be, Brinson picked up the win for going 1 inning, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 2 hits, a walk and a K … Player of the Game: François Mangin … Cliché of the Game: “Hustle and hard work is a big part of our success,” said Tim Torres. “Those qualities define our team.” Torres must be grading success on a curve, given that the Sox are in 6th place with a sub-.500 record.

Game 2 Notables: Goodbye winning streak and chance to hit .500 for the week … SP Amayas Moelling was lit up for 3 runs by the Crusaders in the top of the 1st and never got back on track. He allowed 6 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks in just 3.2 IP … C Hotha Popo went 2-4 with a 3-run homer, and CF Jim Lorenzen went 2-4 with a 2-run homer to highlight the offensive attack … Player of the Game: Daryl Pris, California SS, who went 2-3 who had a solo homer, a double and walk while driving in 3 runs and scoring 2 … Cliché of the Game: “We’ll grab a cold one tonight and go after another win tomorrow,” said Yoriyuki Kobayashi, California 1B, who hit a 3-run homer off Moelling in the 1st inning.

In Sum: There’s no shame in splitting a series with a hot team like the Crusaders, but the Sox always seem to find ways to not take advantage of opportunities. Moelling, especially, has been very up and down all season, looking like the staff ace he should be one game, and then gacking a came away like he did with the final game in this series the next. Ah well, at least the Sox ain't boring. Maddening, yes. Disappointing, almost daily. But not boring.
