06/13/40: Chicago Black Sox @ Hawaii Tropics - Win, 2-1.
Black Sox Bridle Tropics, 2-1
W: M. Peña (4-6) L: S. Taub (5-4) S: P. Bure, Jr. (11).
HR - CHI: T. Cochran (14)

06/14/40: Chicago Black Sox @ Hawaii Tropics - Win, 5-3.
Black Sox Need Extra Frames to Get Past Tropics
W: F. Brinson (3-3) L: N. McConnell (0-3) .
HR - HAW: D. Tallent (12)

Game 1 Notables: SP Manuel Peña continues to dig himself out of the statistical hole he dug for himself with a horrendous first month of the season. In this game, he threw 6.1 innings of 3-hit shutout ball while striking out 4 and walking 1. PQS score: 4 … DH Tommy Cochran clubbed a solo homer in the top of the 6th to score the eventual game winner … Player of the Game: Manuel Peña … Cliché of the Game: “I was a little disappointed,” said Hawaii manager Kelly Finley. “We could’ve and should’ve scored more runs.” Yeah, well, if you would’ve, you wouldn’tve had to come out with such a lame quote, bub.

Game 2 Notables: This game is particularly noteworthy because it was the first extra inning game (in four opportunities) the Sox have won this season ... SP François Mangin pitched a tremendous game to put Chicago in position to notch the W. He went 8.0 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits with 6 Ks and 1 walk. PQS score: 4 … 3 singles and a walk (including a clutch pinch hit by backup 3B Victor Bedolla) won the game in the 11th … That rally saved the day for closer Pavel Bure, who walked 2, hit a batter, and then surrendered a 2-run single to RF Mike Campbell that tied the score … RP Frits Brinson came on to throw 2.2 innings of 1-hit, scoreless relief to lock down the win … Player of the Game: François Mangin … Cliché of the Game: “I really like what we did out there today,” Mangin said. Gee. Really? Us, too!

In Sum: The Sox swept the 2-game series to stay at least sorta, almost competitive in the middle of the Heartland scramble. With 4 games coming up at home against Seattle and 2 against the sizzling California Crusaders, there’s no time to relax. After that, we have 4 against Madison and 3 against Yellow Springs … yikes!
