Game 1 Notables: A pretty miserable exhibition from SP Manuel Peña (3 runs, 6 hits in 4 innings, PQS: 2) to rookie RP Brian Smith (3 runs, 5 hits, 2 walks in 1 inning), to an offense that just sputtered against Kernels SP Don Smith … DH Tommy Cochran continued hitting for power, mashing his 11th homer, while 3B Luis González hit his 7th … Player of the Game: Jorge Rodriguez, Kernels LF, who went 3-4 with a walk and 3 runs scored … Cliché of the Game: “We’ll grab a cold one and go after another win tomorrow,” said RF Gerbrand de Best. Guess no one clued him in that Des Moines still had to play the nightcap of the double header.

Game 2 Notables: That man did it again: DH Tommy Cochran hit a walk-off 3-run homer in the bottom of the 9th to complete a 3-5 day … SP François Mangin got rocked for 5 runs in 1.2 innings, which meant the Sox spent the rest of the game climbing out of the hole. With the score tied in the 9th, Juan Alfonso yielded a lead-off triple that set the stage for SS Fernando Navarro to get a little revenge on his old team: he singled he the go-ahead run. But that just set up Cochran for his bottom of the 9th heroics. After 1B Mark Simpson walked and pinch hitter Emilio Lugo was hit by a pitch, Cochran took one strike from reliever José Castro, then drilled the next pitch 438 feet into the right centerfield stands for the walkoff victory … Player of the Game: Tommy Cochran … Cliché of the Game: “The name of the game is scoring runs,” Cochran said. “We did a good job of that today.” Or at least you did, Tommy.

Game 3 Notables: Chicago played an uncharacteristically sloppy defensive game, allowing 3 unearned runs to score and wasting a decent start from Alejandro Pena (7 IP, 4 hits, 3 unearned runs, PQS score: 4) … Player of the Game: Juan García, Des Moines SP, who threw 6.1 innings with 3 hits, 1 run, 2 walks and 5 Ks. PQS score: 4 … Cliché of the Game: None.

Game 4 Notables: SP Amayas Moelling pitched 8.1 solid innings to lock down his 6th win against 2 losses, allowing 7 hits, 3 runs, 0 walks and 4 Ks. PQS score: 3 … CF Jim Lorenzen had a decent day at the plate, for a change. He went 1-4 with a walk and a 2-run homer … Des Moines SP Tobias Wulms left the game with a sore back after just two batters. Trainers said he would be day-to-day for 4 days, but likely would not miss a start … Player of the Game: Amayas Moelling … Cliché of the Game: “It was a solid team effort,” Moelling said.

In Sum: Man. We struggle against Des Moines and that pitching staff. It was especially dispiriting to see the Sox lose a game to sloppy fielding – when they get a good outing from Alejandro Soto, they need to make it count. Still, this was nowhere near as dispiriting as the series to come, against Twin Cities.

Moelling is so close to breaking out, it's palpable.
