Game 1 Notables: Juan Nicto pitched effectively and DH Tommy Cochran flat-out raked to lead the Sox to a third consecutive win. Nicto threw 8.1 innings, allowing 3 hits and 1 run while walking 1 and striking out 3 while running his season record to 5-2. PQS score: 3 … Cochran, who has emerged as Chicago’s top offensive weapon, went 2-3 with 2 homers, a HBP, 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored … Player of the Game: Tommy Cochran … Cliché of the Game: An understated Cochran told reporters he was “satisfied” with the win.

Game 2 Notables: It was a game of streaks: Chicago won its 4th in a row, while extending the Long Beach losing skid to 8 … Starter Manuel Peña was roughed up for 9 hits and 6 runs in 5.0 innings, but it didn’t matter because Sox bats came alive for 11 hits and 15 runs … DH Tommy Cochran unloaded a grand slam in the ninth inning as part of a 2-6 day … CF Jim Lorenzen, who has been masterful in the field but mired in a miserable slump at the plate, hit a 2-run homer as part of the team’s 7-run 9th inning … Player of the Game: LF Tim Torres, who was 2-4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored … Cliché of the Game: “As well as we’ve been playing, I think we can play even better,” said Sox manager Bret Richards. Just not in the next game, as we shall see.

Game 3 Notables: Starter François Mangin got scorched for 8 runs (6 earned) in 4.1 innings (PQS score: 1) and the Sox winning streak was snapped along with the Long Beach losing skid … One of the few Sox bright spots was DH Tommy Cochran homering in a third consecutive game. On the day, he was 2-4 with 1 RBI and 1 run … Player of the Game: Danya Tchekanov, Long Beach SP, who pitched 7.1 innings allowing 1 run, 5 hits and 0 walks while striking out 9. PQS Score: 5 … Cliché of the Game: “We took advantage of our opportunities,” said Surfers 2B Sloan Daniel. “It’s as simple as that.”

Game 4 Notables: SP Alejandro Soto was wild (6 walks in 5.1 innings of work), but still managed to keep the game close. His PQS score: 3. Unfortunately, middle reliever Ángel Díaz allowed the eventual winning run to score in the bottom of the 8th, and the Sox bats were held relatively silent. DH Tommy Cochran, though, was 3-4 with Chicago’s lone RBI, and LF Tim Torres was 2-4 with a triple and run scored … Player of the Game: Pierre Legrand, Long Beach SP, who went 7.2 innings allowing 1 run, 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4. PQS score: 3 … Cliché of the Game: “We found a way to get it done,” said Long Beach CF Wilson Ford.

In Sum: A split in this series a team that had been back on its heels has to be regarded as disappointing. One thing continues to shine clear and obvious, though: Tommy Cochran has to be in the lineup as much as possible. Whether he’s hitting against lefties (.333/.358/.647) or righties (.348/.297/.697) the man just plain tears the cover off the ball.
