(Daylight is fading as the camera zeros in on Black Sox GM Vic Caleca sprawled on a park bench drinking wine from a bottle wrapped in a paper bag. He’s wearing jeans, a Black Sox warm-up jacket, and a Black Sox cap. As he takes a swig, a homeless gentleman in a tattered sweater pushing a shopping cart approaches.)
Homeless guy: Hey mister, whatcha got there?
Vic Caleca (looking disconsolate): What? Here? Inna bag? Boone’s Farm Strawberry Hill …
Guy: Boone’s Farm? That’s disgusting!
Caleca (Nods): I know. All I had money for.
A woozy Vic Caleca
Caleca: I work for ‘em.
Guy: Sorry to hear that. No wonder you drinking' Boone's Farm ...
Caleca: Tell me about it. (Squints up at the homeless guy). We didn’t always suck, you know. There was one week … one week in May when we were … just kinda OK, you know?
Guy: Well … wha happened?
Caleca: Baseball happened, man. Baseball. My guys can’t hit, can’t pitch … they lose a lot. You know, last week - just this last week - they lost 6. They didn't win none, and they lost 6. So now we ain’t blah. We’re blecchh.
Guy: Know whatcha gotta do?
Caleca: Get a job at Wal-Mart?
Guy: No … wait … they hiring?
Caleca: Dunno. (Takes a swig of Boone’s Farm, he's slurring his words). Just makin’ converfla … converti … aw hell … Just talkin.’
Guy: Uh huh. Well, if your guys don’ hit and don’ pitch and just play blecchh, you know whatcha gotta do, right?
Caleca: No … you tell me.
Guy: You gotta get new guys!
Caleca (laughs bitterly): Not that easy, my friend. Not that easy. Vinnie, he won’ let me trade, and the draft just sucks, and the free agents left now are worse than the draft guys …
Guy: OK. Well, you gotta tell Vinnie to go suck it.
Caleca: Nobody tells Vinnie to suck it. He’s … well, he’s Vinnie.
Guy: Gotta do it anyway. Need different guys if you don’ wanna suck.
Caleca (seems to ponder this a moment): Different guys … hmmm.
(A pair of Calumet City cops come strolling up, hands on their hips near their firearms in case of trouble.)
Officer 1: OK, fellas. Park closes at sundown, and it’s getting’ past sundown. You’d best be movin’ along.
Caleca: All righty, officer.
Officer 2 (Shoots a bemused glance to his partner, then points to Caleca’s Sox cap): Those guys kind of suck, don’t they? You might want to get a different hat.
Caleca (takes off the cap and looks at it, then shakes his head): Hat’s OK, but we might need new guys.
Officer 1: Yeah, yeah. Why don’t you get moving and you figure that all out on your way home, OK?
Caleca (pulls himself to his feet, waves good-bye to the homeless guy who's pushing his cart away from the cops): Righty oh … hey, you know, though, we didn’t always suck. There was this one week in May …
