Game 1 Notables: The Sox took it to extra innings, but relievers Justin Archer and Frits Brinson gacked it up in extra frames. Archer walked two batters and Brinson yielded a walk-off single to lose the game in the 10th. SP Alejandro Soto actually pitched OK, going 8.0 innings and yielding 4 hits, 3 runs and 3 walks against 6 Ks. His PQS score: 4 … Player of the Game: Alejandro Soto … Cliché of the Game: “Win or lose, we always try to grind it out and stay even-keeled,” said Madison 1B Natenael Barral, who delivered the walk-off single in the 10th.

Game 2 Notables: SP Juan Nicto went 4 innings, yielding 5 hits and 2 runs before an hour-long rain delay cut his workday short … Manuel Peña, who was shifted to the bullpen after a disastrous start to his season, got the win in relief, going 3.1 innings and allowing 2 hits and a run … RF Manny Cleide provided the winning margin with a 3-run homer in the top of the 8th inning … Pavel Bure, Jr. nailed down the win with his third save since assuming the closer role … Player of the Game: Madison SP Juan Trujillo, who went 5.0 innings and allowed 0 runs and just 2 hits … Cliché of the Game: “Every game we win now is one less win we’ll need to get in the end,” said Manny Cleide, showing a keen grasp of both mathematics and linear time.

Game 3 Notables: SP Amayas Moelling had an off-outing, pitching 6 innings and allowed 6 hits and 4 runs … Reliever Frits Brinson took the loss, though, giving up a grand slam in the 8th inning as Madison pushed 5 runs across to take a game they’d been trailing 7-4 … LF Tim Torres and RF Manny Cleide were among the offensive starts for the Sox. Torres went 3-5 with an RBI and 2 runs scored, while Cleide went 2-5 with a homer … Player of the Game: Madison PH John Dundee, who hit the grand slam off Brinson … Cliché of the Game: “We came out aggressive,” said Wolves manager Mark Bruner. “We came out swinging the bats.”

In Sum: Sigh. After sweeping Twin Cities, this was a dispiriting series where the Sox lost a couple of games they led late and could easily have won. The bullpen, it seems, is still a work in progress. Still, the rotation has been doing better and the hitting seems to be coming around a bit – the Sox actually have a positive run differential (+2) for the first time in ... well, in a long time.
