The Chicago Black Sox announced Sunday they have successfully claimed relief pitcher León Ramírez off waivers from the Nashville Bluebirds.
Ramírez, 29, was placed on the active roster and is expected to be a long reliever in the Sox bullpen, most likely in so-called “mop-up” duty in games that have gotten out of hand.

Last season in Nashville, Ramírez appeared in 36 games – starting 11 – and threw 98.1 innings. He had an ERA of 4.48 with 108 strikeouts and 80 walks.
He has two years remaining on his contract, which pays $6 million per season.
“We think León will be a valuable addition to our staff,” said pitching coach Art Messer. “He’s someone capable of giving us valuable relief innings and make an occasional spot start when called upon. We’re excited to have him here.”
